When Should I Call 9-1-1?

9-1-1 is for emergencies only. You should only dial 9-1-1 if you are in immediate need of police, fire, or emergency medical assistance.

To help our call takers and emergency responders best serve you, pleas be prepared to answer the following questions when calling 9-1-1:

Where?

Where is the location or address that you are requesting emergency assistance?

What?

What is the nature of the problem that you are calling to report?

When?

Is the incident currently in progress, has it just occurred, or it is delayed?

Who?

Name of the caller, and any parties involved?

Weapons?

Are there any weapons involved (gun, knife, etc.)?

What if I’m calling from a cell phone/mobile device?

When you dial 9-1-1 from your cell phone, your call will hit the nearest tower of your cell phone service provider. Please provide the exact location of the emergency and the 9-1-1 operator from that county/city will transfer you to the appropriate 9-1-1 center. Also, keep in mind that cell phone calls are not always very clear.
